I say it out loud : I LOVE THE CARILLO BROTHERS!
3 brothers, 3 differents souls and the last one, Levi, was the sweetest and so endearing one. I couldn’t not be deeply moved by this character. I read it twice, and each time, Tillie’s prose got me.
Levi is so different from his brothers, witnessing violence so young, and had to survive with his mother and two brothers. His childhood was pretty bad, and he had to show that he was tough, although his sweet and kind side.
Feeling too much, intensely, with a heart of gold. Levi won my heart. His shyness, his edgy sensitivity got into my skin. I could feel it after finishing it. His story gave me goosebumps.
One shy soul met another one … When you think that Levi was intense, Elsie was in the same state of mind. She endured so much, still struggling with her past and all the humiliation she went through.
In this world, when she was always to be quiet, to hide her voice, I was hurting for her. Her words goes straight to my heart. When she couldn’t speak, she wrote her emotions on paper and it was poetry in your hands.
Everything was intense, deep with the ability to challenge you, to make you feel. While reading it, I was totally affected by people’s behavior towards Elsie, how could you be that way, bullying people, wrecking you, shattering you until the moment that you lose the battle.
Passionate, scorching, sweet and incredibly romantic and beautifully written, you cannot remain unaffected. This story is golden and takes a special place in my heart. I wasn’t prepared for this rush of emotion, crashing into waves, but I never drown, because I was following Levi’s path of light. Hope for a better future. A story like no one else.
