“My guardian angel is a drunk.”
Evelyn Casey’s life is at a standstill. She’s in her mid-twenties, struggling with the dating scene in San Francisco. Nothing seems to be working out, and she’s starting to think that she’ll live out her days in her crummy apartment with her overbearing roommate, Brooklyn. It’s absurd, but sometimes Evey longs for a guardian angel to show up and save the day.
And then he does. Seriously. His name is Lucian and he’s a guardian angel, been on the job for two thousand years. His sudden presence in her life is both good—he’s brilliant, witty, and warm—and bad—he’s brilliant, witty, warm, and hot as —-. But as perfect as Lucian seems, he’s got problems of his own. He’s taken up drinking and he’s brazenly inserted himself into Evey’s life, going against the greatest cosmic law ever created.
For Evey, the rules are simple: You are not allowed to hook up with your guardian angel. But sometimes fulfilling your destiny requires a leap of faith, a confrontation with God.
Yes, God as in God.

“Isn’t love supposed to be easy? Isn’t love supposed to be fun? The moment you fall in love, you become acutely aware of all the different ways the person you love can die. It’s sickening. It’s morbid and painful and heart-wrenching, and it’s all totally worth it.”
Lucian Divine made me speechless, I read this book utterly captivated, and I was under Renée Carlino’s writing spell. This book was so different from what the author used to write, and the paranormal part intrigued me.
I had to tell you, even with the “paranormal” elements this story can be totally read like a contemporary. The more I read it, the more I experienced Lucian and Evey’s journey, an epic love, out of time and space. The prose was magnificent and ethereal, the words were placed on the paper with such grace, with an extraordinary lightness. At times surreal …
Lucian is definitely no angel, tortured soul in love with someone he couldn’t have, his addictions lead him to this empty life, where he has to be the witness and guardian of the love of his life. I felt connected to this character, his flaws, sensitivity, passion made me fall for him. His devotion and unconditional love was incredible.
Evey, well totally unlucky in her love life and totally oblivious that someone was watching over her. I loved the fierceness, boldness and how powerful she was. She was a force of nature, fighting for the ones she loved.
How would you react if you’d met your guardian angel? From that moment where Lucian revealed his true self and purpose to Evey, their lives were going to change forever, for the good and the bad.
I was surprised by this book, definitely not that I’m used to when it comes to Renée Carlino, but it definitely worked for me at every levels.
This book was intense and passionate, with a love that transcended time and space. Their story was mesmerizing, so deep and gave me chills.
Lucian and Evey’s story gave me hope, I could feel it. When you found the one, your soul mate, you have to fight together and as one stay strong. No matter the hardships you have to overcome, love can conquer all. When you read Lucian Divine, everything makes sense. Just take the time to really live and feel. A beautiful story about faith and hope, with a hint of humor and satirical tone.
A must read!
